Diabetic recently diagnosed wanting to lose weight?!

Question: Diabetic recently diagnosed wanting to lose weight.?
I was recently diagnosed in September with Diabetes type 2. I am 19 and am around 12 stone (168lbs) overweight. I am joining a slimming group in the morning but it tells you with the diet sheet that the foods you can eat as much of as you want are mullerlight yoghurts and fruit. Are these yoghurts high in sugar.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
you need to be following a low-fat, sugar-free diet. You NEED carbohydrates, to keep your blood sugar levels even. That means bread, pasta, rice, (wholemeal if possible), and potatoes. Those foods should make up 1/3 of your daily food intake. Another 1/3 should be of vegetables, some fruit (not too much, because of the sugar content) and lean meat/poultry/fish. The final 1/3 should be dairy produce (milk, cheese, etc., all the low-fat versions).

The Rosemary Conley diet is the best balanced one of all the slimming clubs. Each session includes 45 minutes of aerobic exercise (the others don't do ANY, yet charge the same kind of price)

The doctor who diagnosed you with Diabetes should have referred you to a dietitian. There are some helpful websites, if you type in the word Diabetes. There are also many decent cookery books that cater for diabetic diets.Health Question & Answer

My suggestion is that you don't join a normal weight loss program. Most nutritionists emphasize a low-calorie, low-fat diet that's rich in grains and fruit. Grains = carbohydrates. Fruit = sugar = carbohydrates. Carbohydrates = raised blood sugar. Diabetics should eat mainly meat, dairy and vegetables. Certain foods that are on the no-no list include: sugar, especially refined sugar, potatoes, white rice (or any rice!), bread, pasta, and other starchy vegetables.

If you must have bread or rice, eat whole wheat bread or diabetic bread and brown rice. Be careful of portions. Use your blood sugar meter to determine how many carbohydrates you can eat in a day, but the usual range is between 40-100 depending upon how active you are and what the sources of the carbohydrates are. For example, carbohydrates from vegetables (like peppers or onions) aren't going to have as much of an impact on your blood sugar as carbohydrates from a slice of cake or a piece of bread.

This diet really works. I know a Type 2 diabetic on a low-carbohydrate diet who lost 70 pounds in four and a half months. That's excessive, but it's possible to drop serious amounts of weight WHILE controlling your diabetes.

Calories and fat are not as important as carbohydrates to a diabetic. Unless you have high cholesterol/triglycerides or at risk for heart disease, a high-fat diet will actually help you block carbohydrate absorption, thereby lowering blood sugar. If you do go very low carb, you'll need to makeup nutritional value elsewhere, so it's important that you don't restrict calories and fat too much.

Traditional weight-loss groups like Weight Watchers just don't cater to diabetes. In fact, they encourage you to eat foods that are bad for you.

Remember this: there's no nutritional value in carbohydrate-rich foods that you can't find in lower-carb foods or in supplements. They're not essential for living. Protein and vegetables are better for your diabetes, better for your weight loss, and better for your overall prognosis. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

I would suggest doing a low carb diet. Many diabetics find that they are able to lose weight easily and their blood sugar is kept under control. I don't know anything about mullerlight yogurt. I live in the US, I don't think we have that here. Have you been tested for celiac disease.? Many people with celiac have diabetes and weight problems. Good luck to you!Health Question & Answer

i am in the USA and am diabetic, be real careful with weight loss programs. be sure they are set up for your diabetes, DO NOT use a carb free diet. you should get with a doctor to work out how many carbs you need each meal and what kind of carbs but you need some carbs every day. i do not know about you yogurt, but here the food label would spell it out for you. look at carbs and sugars.Health Question & Answer

a muller light yoghurt without the fruit filling would hold between 30 and forty grammes of carbohydrate and whereas cereal fillings carry very little carbohydrate the jam and fruit fillings are very sweetHealth Question & Answer
