Genital warts are very contagious. Even by touching the affected area, it can be spread. As far as telling your wife, I would, but just be prepared for the worst.
Most females are asymptomatic (showing no symptoms) to genital warts, so it would be quite difficult to check your wife for them (especially without her knowing).
