I am 18 and i have scoliosis. I went to the doctor a year ago and it was at 43 degrees and over the past year the pain has been getting worse. Should i get surgery.? At what degree is surgery required.? My doctor said that it was still up to me if i wanted the surgery but i don't know if it's worth it to put my self through all of that.Health Question & Answer

Well with any surgery, you need to weigh the pros and cons and the cost benifit anylysis. Ask to talk to someone who has had the surgery.

As a PT and a respiratory therapist--I would ask some of these questions to the surgeron

1. First have a lung function test and see how much of your lung function is affected. Most patients with a curve of almost 45 degrees is going to have some compromise. Ask how much function will be restored and how much will it get worse if you do not have the surgery

2. Ask the risks and complications of the surgery

3. What is the recovery of the surgery. How long in the hospital, how long in rehab, how long off work or school

4. If I do not have the surgery how much will it get worse and how will it affect my function such as walking, pain, etc

5. What rehab will be involved after the surgery.

I would also get a second opinion. YOur curve is pretty significant. Your spine is basically perpendicular to the ground. 45 degrees would put your spine in the same plane as the floor. Having worked with many patients with scoliosis is it a pretty serrious problem. Surgery in my opinion only gets more complicated as you get older. You are at risk for pain and arthritis. Your body needs to compensate to keep your head upright. This puts your mechanics in an inefficent position.

I don't think your at that point yet but, that would be up to you. If your in pain a lot then maybe if you think it's bad enough but, remember it's going to be a couple of years in pain. I was in a body cast for almost a year then a walking cast for months then a brace for months. I still have the pains and no relief. I am on a drug program now with a spinal stimulator. Think about it. It's not a walk in the park.Health Question & Answer
