Is it bad that my spine is curved?!

Question: Is it bad that my spine is curved.?
My spine is kind of curved. It doesn't curve from side to side, but rather protrudes out at the bottom. Can mild forms of scoliosis potentially turn into anything bad.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
My interpretation of your description is that you have a lumbar kyphosis, somewhat unusual.

Some mild spinal curves, whether kyphotic, lordotic or scoliotic are relatively benign. Others have the potential to worsen. A common example is lumbar lordosis, a rather normal finding in humans. But, if accentuated by continued poor posture or by a "beer belly" it can lead to severe back ache in later years.

Some spinal curves occur for unknown reasons and are called ideopathic. Others may be the result of congenital malformation of one or more vertebrae. Others are the result of neuromuscular defects such as seen in Kugelberg Welander disease (juvenile spinal atrophy). [I purposely picked one of the worst examples. Don't lay awake nights worrying about this rare affliction.]

Some orthopedic surgeons have greater interest and expertise in treating scoliosis and other forms of curvature. Some also take more time explaining things well to patients. Ask your personal doctor for a referral.Health Question & Answer
