Whether or not you will lose your hair depends on what drugs are a part of your chemo regimen. Your nurses will explain to you which drugs you are receiving, and they will be able to tell you whether or not alopecia is a side effect of your treatment.

If you are going to lose your hair, it usually happens right around three weeks after your first treatment, so you don't need to rush out tonight and get a buzz cut. When it does fall out, it will come out in the course of a few days. Usually, my patients describe an achy pain a day or so before the hair starts to fall. (Sort of like the achiness you feel when your hair has been in a ponytail too long.)

If you have hair loss to look forward to, there a few things you can do. First of all, if you are concerned about looking as "normal" as possible, and want to retain your present look, you'll want to make an appointment with a wig place soon. They will assist you in finding a wig that matches your color and style. This is, of course, easier to do while you have hair.

also, most people will get their hair cut short prior to it falling out. You will find that the hair goes everywhere, and it's easier to deal with it if it's short. Of course, it's all up to you. It's your hair, your call.

Good luck to you as you begin your treatments. I wish you well.Health Question & Answer

It depends on the chemo and the dose, when I was on Cisplatin I did not lose my hair but when i started on carboplatin and taxol I did. It was really hard for me to deal with at first, having always had long hair, but after you get used to it, it isn't so bad, at least you can wear really cute scarves and it takes no time at all to get ready to go somewhere! lol Losing the eye-lashes was the hardest part I think because it drastically changes your look! Good luck and stay positive, there is life after cancerHealth Question & Answer

Whether or not you lose your hair depends on the type and strength of the chemo. My dad had leukaemia and ended up bald as a peanut withim 3 days whilst my aunt has bowel cancer and has only noticed thinning even though she has been on chemo for 9 months.

The best thing to do is ask your doctor whether he thinks the chemo will make you lose your hair - in fact, it might be listed as one of the side effects on the consent and information forms.

If you do start to lose your hair you can go to the hairdresser and explain to them what is happening and they may be able to sort you out with a cut that makes the hair loss less noticeable. That's what my aunt did, and you wouldn't know from looking at her that she is on chemo.

All the best with the treatment xHealth Question & Answer

It really depends on the drug. I've met several breast cancer survivors and they all said they lost all their hair. I went through chemo and radiation and lost hair in spots where the radiation went in. Now I'm on a mega dose of chemo and my hair is still thinning, but not coming out in clumps yet. Only cut it if you notices massive amounts coming out, like in the shower...you'll see the difference.Health Question & Answer

First off, I am so very sorry that you're going through cancer and treatment. It's very scary, especially when you don't know what to expect. Not only do you have to go through treatment, but you gotta worry about your hair falling out, if it's not one thing its another, right.? lol
I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in August of 08. I had long long long black hair (down past my belly button) and my Doctor told me it was best that I cut it because a) it would prolly fall out and b) that my hair follicals could get irritated and the less pain I have the better.
My Oncologist told me that after about the 2nd treatment my hair should fall out (I was getting ABVD 2 times a month) and I should expect it to grow back after my chemotherapy was completed.
I'm getting my next treatment on Monday (my 12th) and my hair is still here! No one can understand it, apparently it happens (not often) but sometimes, where people's hair will thin, but not fall out.
My hair def. thinned out, I ended up cutting it up to my ears (omg I cried) but it never came out all the way. What hair I lost is growing back, it feels crazy lol.
I guess it just depends on the person. I wanted to shave my head just because I couldn't take the images of my hair just clumping and falling out when I touched it. But it never did. I just took it slow, cut my hair a lil at a time those first two months, until I just kind of took a wait and see approach.
I hope your hair doesn't fall out! It's bad enough we have to deal with getting chemotherapy! I wish you luck!Health Question & Answer

I dont know of anyone. My mother in law lost her hair about a week after her 1st round of Chemo. She didnt cut it hoping it wouldnt fall out, and she said it hurt as it was falling out. It wasnt an uncontrollable pain though, so don't be scared. It was more like the pain you have if you have your hair in a clip all day, and then you take it out kind of feeling.

I wanted to add that she has a few wigs that look amazing.

Good luck to you!Health Question & Answer
