Answers:
Crackles are heard when there is pulmonary congestion either from infection or fluid overload, or simply just from COPD. Depending on the cause is how they are treated. If caused by fluid overload (CHF) the patient would be given diuretics to help get rid of the excess fluid via the kidneys and urination. If they are caused by infection such as pneumonia your likely to hear course sounds as well and would be classified as course crackles. Many pateints experiencing this would be treated with nebulizers (atrovent and either albuterol or xopenex) and oxygen by nasal cannula. If infection is present antibiotics would be given, either IV or orally. Fluid restrictions you mention are usually only done of fluid overload such as CHF. This is done because the person already has too much water in the body and to increase the amounts would only worsen the problems. These people are basically drowning in thier own fluids. Hope this helps. Best wishesHealth Question & Answer

Crackles are the sound you hear from sticky alveoli popping open. This can be caused by infection, volume overload, or not deep breathing (actelectasis) A patient with pneumonia would have IV antibiiotics, oxygen therapy, deep breathing exercises with an incentive spirometer, and possibly inhalers. Pulmonary edema is caused by a weak heart not pneumonia, fluid restriction in a patient producing alot of mucous only makes it harder for the patient to expel this mucous.Health Question & Answer

Every 4-6 hrs nebulizers, deep breathing and/or incentive spirometry.
Crackles, aka rales can be located in the alveoli, larger airways and bronchioles. It is commonly air moving through fluid, however atelectasis (collapsed lung tissue) produces the sound as well.Health Question & Answer
