Boyfriend had herpes years ago. What are my chances of catching it?!

Question: Boyfriend had herpes years ago. What are my chances of catching it.?
My boyfriend is 35. He recently told me that when he was 19, he contracted genital herpes (according to him, they were "bumps on the head of his penis). He said that he had outbreaks for about a year, and that they "stopped." According to him, he hasn't had an outbreak in over 15 years.

We use condoms every time we're intimate (except for the first weeks that we were dating). I was tested for HIV, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and herpes about a month ago, and everything turned up clean.

Even though my boyfriend says that he hasn't had an outbreak in 15 years, it still worries me that I might contract herpes. If I have oral sex with my boyfriend or choose not to use a condom (in case we want to have children one day), what are my chances of catching it.?Health Question & Answer

Oh my goodness! You're so lucky you didn't get herpes the first few weeks you didn't use a condom! Herpes DOES NOT GO AWAY. Someone who gets herpes has herpes for the rest of their life. However, many people with herpes may NEVER have an outbreak (which is rare) or only have a few outbreaks or even have mild outbreaks, which they may not even notice.

ALWAYS use a condom with him. Just because he doesn't suffer from outbreaks does not mean that he does not have herpes. Moreover, herpes affects people differently. For example, say you did end up getting herpes from him, you could have extreme outbreaks or you could have only 1 outbreak for your entire life. Like I said, herpes may not really affect your boyfriend; however, it could really affect you if you were to get it.

also, you can get herpes in your mouth or on your lips from oral sex IF he is currently suffering from an outbreak. But you must be aware that sometimes he might not even know that he has an outbreak because it is so mild that it just goes unnoticed. Seriously, check out his penis before you do anything with him.

You should check out various websites about herpes or even herpes forums where people discuss living with the virus. Just Google "genital herpes."

Always wear a condom with him even with oral sex and get checked for STDs annually, even if you're monogamous with him.Health Question & Answer

herpes doesnt ever go away even if he hant had an outbreak in a long time it doesnt matter you can still get it... even if you use condons you can still contract it because the condom does not cover the whole genital area... to reduce your risk he should be taking valtrex or some other medication. you can still contract it from oral sex as well though the risk is very low it is still possible. as far as having children you would have to ask your dr... and you CAN STILL GET HERPES ORALLY OR GENITALLY IF HE IS NOT HAVING AN OUTBREAK!Health Question & Answer

well if u haven't gotten it within the last 15 years i don't think u will get it! I would take precautions though. Wear condoms & have him take valtrex! Never have sex on outbreaks!Health Question & Answer
