An EKG is a simple procedure that takes less than five minutes. If you have been experiencing problems like an extra heart beat or skipping a beat or two or fluttering, then an EKG is preformed. If there is any irregulars detected by the EKG, then you may have to wear a monitor for one day. They will explain how it works and what you can and can't do. When my heart fluttered one time, it was because of slightly high blood pressure. There are a lot of reasons that the heart does what it does and testing is the only way to find the problem. Anxiety also causes the heart to go off it's normal function as does worry, being overweight, caffeine and cigarettes and the list goes on. I wish for you the very best young lady and good luck on finding the problem and that is is a minor one.Health Question & Answer

My experience and opinion.Health Question & Answer

Hi ash,

For a normal EKG/ECG, all that happens is you lie on a bed while the technician attaches small sticky pads to your chest, arms and legs and connects you to a machine that reads your heart rate and rhythm. It takes only a few minutes.

The monitor is similar, but you will only have the pads on your chest - there are usually three stuck over your lower ribs and one higher up towards each shoulder. They usually stay on for 24 hours, sometimes 48. They are connected to a small box that you wear on your belt or over your shoulder, which records heart rate/rhythm as above. If you feel any sort of cardiac 'episode' coming on, there is usually a button on the monitor that you can press to highlight this so that they can look for changes around that particular time.

You cannot bathe or shower while you are wearing the monitor. Other than that, you can go about all your normal daily activities. I have very sensitive skin and find that they get very itchy after just a few hours, but most people don't even notice that they are there.

I hope that helps. Take care.Health Question & Answer

Personal experience - have had many ECGs and holter monitors.Health Question & Answer

EKG is an electrical recording of the heart conduction. It is some times referred to as a 12 lead and can tell your Dr. about certain areas, they can indicate if there has been damage to the muscle . It takes a tech. a couple minutes to hook you up and less than a minute to run.The monitor is something your sent home with fits into a pouch you can hang around the neck or put on belt or in a jacket pocket. This is usually ordered to rule out whether or not you are having rhythm disturbances, sometimes these disturbances can cause fainting, lightheadedness but it is a diagnostic tool to make sure your ticker is regular, not only during an ekg but doing routine things. They are small stick on electrodes ( stick best on clean alcohol dried skin) as other reply stated. have to unplug for bathing, but you'll be given instructions. Relax... when all said and done whatever your medical issue, it may not be related to heart at all!Health Question & Answer

There will be sticky pads stuck to your chest which will be connected by wires to a small box (monitor) which will record your heart's electrical activity. Usually the monitor is placed in a pouch that you wear. It is completely portable.Health Question & Answer
