The wrong kind of sugar in an emergency?!

Question: The wrong kind of sugar in an emergency.?
I used to work in a school, and happened to be in the office when a severely diabetic child was there; the secretary tested his blood and found him dangerously low, and she was scrambling around the office, looking for his glucose tablets. I said, "Why not just give him this mini Hershey bar in the meantime.?!.?" (My grandmother and father are diabetic, so I've seen this before...) She snapped at me, "That's the WRONG kind of sugar that he needs!!!"
So: was she right.? Or was I right.? Or something else entirely.?
Thanks!Health Question & Answer

Answers:
no the only difference is that sugars from things like chocolate take longer to absorb (lactose) compared to fruit sugars (fructose) or glucose tabs (glucose). they all work fine, although honestly fruit juices work fastest for me compared to solids like glucose tabs.

edit: what i mean to say is, YOU were right, if they were delaying like that, because giving him the chocolate right away would have started working while they were busy looking for the glucose tabsHealth Question & Answer

I do belive they are two different kinds of sugar.

Sugar is a class of edible crystalline substances, mainly sucrose, lactose, and fructose. Human taste buds interpret its flavor as sweet. Sugar as a basic food carbohydrate primarily comes from sugar cane and from sugar beet, but also appears in fruit, honey, sorghum, sugar maple (in maple syrup), and in many other sources. It forms the main ingredient in much candy. Excessive consumption of sugar has been associated with increased incidences of type 2 diabetes, obesity and tooth decay.[1]

Glucose (Glc), a monosaccharide (or simple sugar) also known as grape sugar, blood sugar, or corn sugar, is a very important carbohydrate in biology. The living cell uses it as a source of energy and metabolic intermediate. Glucose is one of the main products of photosynthesis and starts cellular respiration in both prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) and eukaryotes (animals, plants, fungi, and protists).Health Question & Answer

Well, it's the same sugar. But the fat in the candy bar makes the sugar absorb more slowly.

I disagree that she should have given the child chocolate in the meantime. The chocolate would have absorbed a lot more slowly. If she couldn't find the tabs there are plenty of other foods that would have done the trick just as well, such as juice or pop or another type of candy.Health Question & Answer

You are 100% correct. If you don't have the Glucose tabs then why in the world would you not use a good old fashion hershey bar. Or maybe just let him die!!!Some people can't see the forest for the trees>>>

First, off, there's no 'severely' diabetic, you are or you aren't...

Secondly, you were right. Any sugar is better than no sugar.

She was irritable and panicked, and wrong.Health Question & Answer

You were right! For a low blood sugar ANY kind of sugar is better than running around in a panic. Juice, candy... anything available!Health Question & Answer
