Question: How worried should I be about vomiting blood.?

I have bulimia, and have recently been through a very emotionally traumatic time in my life, and have been basically making myself sick everyday for the last two weeks. Last night though, i saw that there was a small amount of blood in my vomit. I don't know how concerned I should be about this, because I suspect it has come from the lining of my throat, which is understandably now very sore. Should I go to my doctor about this.? I am about to be entered into a therapy programme for eating disorders, so I am trying to stop this behaviour, and I understand already how destructive it is. Health Question & Answer

This has most likely been caused by bursting a blood vessel because of the force of the vomit, although this could also be an indication that you have a bleeding point in your stomach; all instances of abnormal bleeding, needs to be investigated, see your GP today.

Your esophagus is very fragile and is most definitely irritated by your condition. Your esophagus can rupture and you could bleed profusely. Tears and injury to your esophagus may require surgery therefore not allowing for normal function for the rest of your life, not to mention that you could bleed to death and/or swallow the blood and suffocate.

The bleeding may also be from somewhere else within your body. Where ever it is coming from take it as a serious warning sign, your body is screaming for you to help yourself ASAP.

There are many risks of bulimia and perhaps one of the most dangerous is Mallory-Weiss tears of the oesophagus. These can tear though the oesophageal blood vessels and cause bleeding profuse enough to cause exsanguination . You must seek further medical advise about both your bleeding and your bulimia.

Get medical help, not just about the bulimia but about the blood how worried you should be depends on what condition you have, we are not able to preform physicals on you so we can't diagnose you, see a doctor about the blood and a psychiatrist about the bulimia.Health Question & Answer
