people with down syndrome often have been referred to as mongoloids because of their resemblance to people from Mongolia. it has also been a term used in medical practice years ago. today it is a slang word and often a hate word...like retard (I absolutely hate that word!) and you are right...their hearts can be broken because of so called "normal" peoples ignorance and stupidity. I have a beautiful little boy who happens to have down syndrome...it is just something he has...he is not by any means defined by it... he is my son above everything else and the joy of my life.

It's slang. When I was growing up one of our gang was a "mongol" as it was referred to then (late 1970's). It wasn't really derogatory but comes from the fact that Down's Syndrome suffers actually do look a little like Mongols (native of Mongolia - think Gengis Khan).
As to your paragraph after your question, I entirely agree. As kids though, we sometimes teased Chris, although looking back we all teased each other. We knew he was different but he often played with us and was as good a childhood friend as anyone can be. In fact tis relationship when I was growing up has probably had a massive positive effect on how I view disabled or "challenged" people....Health Question & Answer
