Question: After a blood clot has been found in the body and treated with medicines, should a repeat ultrasound be done.?
Before leaving the hospital after bloodclots have been treated, should the doctor do a repeat ultrasound to ensure the clots are now gone, or is doing repeat scans not common.? This is for a 24 yr old athletic female who sustained an injury to her ankle and developed the clots as a consequence. Health Question & Answer
Answers:
No.
After a DVT or PE (the blood clot), we do NOT repeat imaging -- it has not been shown in scientific studies to be helpful or change outcomes. You just take 6 months of anticoagulation (usually warfarin, or trade name Coumadin) and that's the end of it.Health Question & Answer
