What is normal for blood sugar? Am I diabetic?!

Question: What is normal for blood sugar.? Am I diabetic.?
I've been struggling with low blood sugar for about 8 years now (I'm 24) and when I first went to the doctor and found out that it was my blood sugar that was making me feel weird, he gave me some simple remedies in case I needed something fast(ie. peanut butter, honey under the tongue, etc.) and told me to just eat well and healthily. He also told me that over time that it could go away or develop into diabetes. I've been feeling strange a lot for the past few months, but every time I think to check my blood sugar is when I feel good. At about 6:00pm I checked my sugar and it showed 111. I was hungry, but I just chose to drink a glass of tea. I waited around and then at 6:45 I checked it again and it said 132. Should it jump up that high from one glass of tea.? I still don't know what the real guidelines are for high blood sugar and when exactly to measure it.Health Question & Answer

Check out Jennifer's page for the best guidelines on testing at home... keep a diary of your readings for a few days...

Her guidelines are for diabetics. Use the time table she gives, but bear in mind that for a healthy, non-diabetic person, normal readings would be lower than the ones she gives, which are targets for diabetics.

Yours should be:

Before meals should be around 4.0 to 5.5.

1 or 2 hours after meals should be under 7.8. These are the numbers for Canadian and UK meters.

If you are in the USA, premeal should be around 70

and 1 or 2 hours after a meal, it should be under 140. Under 120 would be better.

I highly recommend that you get an HbA1c test, and also a Glucose Tolerance Test.

Hypoglycemia often becomes diabetes. This happened to both me and my mother. It may have happened to you, but the only way to know for sure is to get the proper tests.

Normal range is 70-120, but its recently been changed to 70-110. Everyones blood sugar fluctuates out of range. Its a matter of whether or not your pancreas can make enough or any insulin to lower your glucose. The best time to check it is about 2-3 hours after a meal. By this time your body should lower it within normal range by this time.Health Question & Answer
