I recentley had a cervical smear,?!

Question: I recentley had a cervical smear,.?
the results came back fine no abnormalities, however i've recently discovered a small bump/spot inside my vaginal lips, if i had the HPV virus wouldn't this have shown up on my smear results.?.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
No - it would not show up on the smear test. They do not test for HPV as there are more than 100 different strains, and most women already have it. What they do test for is abnormal cells, which is the result of having a specific strain of HPV that causes cervical cancer.

But, that's no need for cause to stress. I would guess that your bump could be any number of other things. An ingrown hair, or a sebaceous cyst are probably more likely than HPV. If its just one bump, don't pick at it. Just keep an eye on it to see if it changes. If its really bothering you, ask a doctor to look at it. But don't make yourself sick worrying about it. It's probably NOTHING. And even if it was HPV, and the type that gives genital warts - this goes away in most people within 1-2 years. There are much worse things that it could be :)Health Question & Answer

Buba is right. I believe that the way they test for HPV (or any genital wart) would be to put some special chemical on it, if it changes colour then you have the virus, smear tests are for the cervix so viruses in the vaginal area would be unlikely to be noticed. Your best bet would be to go to the doctor, or to an std clinic (sometimes called sexual health clinics in the UK now) and get tested. As Buba said it could be a number of things, so get yourself checked out. Good luckHealth Question & Answer

i have a bump on my inner lip down there and i thought it was a wart and i freaked out and went to the docs...
its was nothing - literally nothing ! he said if you look in a vagina, its full of lumps and bumps and its normal - this was a surprize for meHealth Question & Answer

Not necessarily, it depends on the type of testing they did. There can be other causes for what you describe. I would call your doctor and explain your concern to him or her. Health Question & Answer
