Hi
I am so sorry to hear about your friend with lung cancer.
I have nursed several people with lung cancers and I can truthfully say that none of them died "screaming in pain " as the other poster described. The doctors will always ensure that pain is well controlled usually by the means of using a morphine based drug such as Morphine via a syringe pump.
The final stages I have seen most commonly are that the person is usually unconscious for several hours prior to death and that the pain is well controlled.
