Diabetes and hemoglobin count?!

Question: Diabetes and hemoglobin count.?
my mom has diabetes (type 2.?) and my aunt was talking about her hemoglobin count. my aunt (who's a nurse) asked what it was, and my mom said, "you don't want to know." then my aunt guessed 9. then my mom said, "try 16."
i asked my aunt what the normal count is, and she said it was 6.

my mom's doctor said that she's never seen a hemoglobin count that high. but i looked it up, and i'm really confused, because every site i go to says that the normal count for women is 12.1-15.1 G/DL.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
no the normal count is around 6. Although your'e doctor saying that your mum's count is the highest he's seen isn't true as i know several diabetic's whoses count has been higher than that. But I would encourage your mum to get it down as long term high's lead to long term complications. I used to have high's when i was younger and as a result have had to have laser treatment to my eyes.Health Question & Answer

if you are talking about hemoglobin level, it should be between 12 and 15 gr/100 ml (dL), 9 gr would be anemia, 16 gr would be high, the reasons to have a high hemoglobin count are various, living in high altitude is one, polyglobulia (polycitemia) is another, some lung diseases (lung fibrosis) go with it; in a diabetic, it could be dehydration also. Any way, having 16 gr/dL of hemoglobin should lead to some research (means, go to her physician).
Diabetics also have another test done, it is called Glycosilated Hemoglobin, and it has nothing to do with the hemoglobin level, this test, also called A1c is done in order to see how has been the glucose level in the last three months (the glucose in your blood gets "fixed" to the hemoglobin protein, and the rate of "fixing" gives you an idea of how high the glucose levels have been), its value is expressed in percent and is normal having under 6.5%, better if it is 6%.Health Question & Answer

Hemoglobin count for a woman is about 12-15. You are right. The only reason that I know this is because my mother had some health issues a few years ago and her hemoglobin count got down to a 8 and they had to give her a blood transfusion.

EDIT- Or are you talking about the AC1 level- which should be about 6. If that is what you are referring too, your doc is right- 16 would be extremely highHealth Question & Answer
