Question on the gluten protein?!

Question: Question on the gluten protein.?
Ok I've heard that peanuts can stay in a person's mouth for up to two hours after they've eaten whatever it is that had peanut in it. If they were then to kiss someone that is allergic to peanut, that person would get a reaction.

So what about gluten.? I have an EXTREME sensitivity to gluten (aka Celiac) and have been telling my boyfriend like an hour is fine or even 20 minutes if he brushes his teeth really really well. But I just learned about the peanut thing so it got me wondering...

Does anyone know how long the gluten protein can stay in someones mouth.?.?Health Question & Answer

Sorry, but there really hasn't been any (that I can find) real studies on this. It would be a great research project for someone looking for a thesis or study or something. I am sure there is grant money out there to study this question.
Personally, I usually follow the 2 hour rule for my hubby after he brushes and rinses his mouth out after eating any gluteny. We also make sure he wears gf lip balm, etc. AND that his toothpaste and chewing gum or breath mints are also gf.
If we can get glutened licking envelopes, then we can get glutened doing other seemingly harmless things like sharing a dish sponge, kissing, lotion, shampoo, makeup, etc.
Personally, I tend to follow the same rules as the allergic do when it comes to potential indirect exposure/ ingestion issues. I am also very sensitive and just don't feel any desire to "push the envelope" on anything like that.... (no pun intended, haha! That's probably a joke only another celiac would get, lol!).
Anyway, my rule of thumb is one hour with additional water drinking and flossing if he can't brush, 2 hours if he can't floss, etc. 30 min with full brushing, flossing and a couple glasses of water. Seems extreme, but I stay healthy that way. If he wants a kiss, he had better be gluten free. That is pretty much why he basically went gf with me, less worry and bother, more lovin', lol!Health Question & Answer

Christine,
You are right to be cautious. Depending on your sensitivity, gluten may be transferred during contact and this may provoke a reaction.

Q & A

QUESTION: You mentioned that if a person with Celiac Disease was to kiss someone who had eaten gluten that person would first need to brush their teeth. Well, I was wondering if the person who had eaten gluten chewed some gluten-free gum after eating if that would be sufficient. If a person with Celiac Disease was going to kiss someone who had eaten gluten would they be able to instead of brushing their teeth or possibly chewing gum just rinse their mouth out with water.? Would that be sufficient.?

DR. FINE: I think this is mostly an issue requiring common sense since there are no studies of which I am aware that addresses the issue. Unlike dangerous immediate hypersensitivity food allergy, where anaphylaxis can kill a food allergic patient if they encounter small doses of antigen, gluten sensitivity is chronic food sensitivity where no such risk exists. Furthermore, I would conjecture to say that any dose of gluten encountered while kissing someone who ate food normally, rinsed their mouth, brushed their teeth, or chewed gum would be minimal and unlikely to be a problem.
