I'm presuming that you are in India. You will be surprised to know by the time we reach adulthood, almost all of us are infected with the bacterium that causes the disease, which lies dormant till our immunity falls low, usually as a result of malnutrition, AIDS, bad environmental condition, poor housing and ventilation, indoor air pollution etc...... The bacterium is universally present in India and other developing countries, but not everyone develops the disease, especially if you've been vaccinated immediately after birth with BCG.
The bacterium enters the lung, inside the immunity producing cells (macrophages, to be precise), resists destruction and multiplis. These cells produce sudstances that attract other cells to attack these bacteria. Actually, the damage to the bodyoccurs because of this exaggerated immune response itself. It produces cheesy material and the lung tissue is progressively destroyed.
Patients have symptoms such as cough lasting more than 15 days with low grasde fever,especially during the evenings for weeks on end, a lot of weight loss and blood in the cough later.
The good news is that the government hospitals have an excellent systom of treatment called DOTS. In fact, you must visit a government hospital for free diagnosis and treatment. Private doctors are unfortunately responsible for the poor diagnosis of TB in india. The treatment lasts for 6 months normally and in the initial 2 months, the patient is required to come to the hospital every alternate day to collect the medicines and in the last 4 months, every week
This system has been put into place because even though the excellent drugs avilable now can CURE 100% of patients, they do not take it regularly. This has given us a lot of headache, and the bacteria are becoming resistant. You are strongly advised to visit any government hospital and take the drugs regularly for 6 months. This is one of the few government given services that is better than the private sector and you must utilise to help yourself and the community at large by not spreading the disease or resistance in the bacteria.
