If when we breathe we dont oxygenate our blood and dont have oxygen from a cylinder, what will happen?!

Question: If when we breathe we dont oxygenate our blood and dont have oxygen from a cylinder, what will happen.?
my mother has been sent home from hospital with oxygen because she is not oxygenating her blood but she feels it is a medicine and not necessary to have it every day. She feels she only has to have it when she is out of breath. I have tried to explain but she wont listen. I need information so that I can explain that she should have it all the time and not for an hour every 3 or 4 days just because she went upstairs. She feels she only has to go outside and take some deep breaths to get oxygen.Health Question & Answer

Matt A is correct, she needs to be on her oxygen AS her doctor prescribed. By waiting until she feels like she needs it, she's depriving her body of the much needed oxygen and possibly damaging her cells and organs. Explain to her that it's as if she waited until she was dehydrated before getting something to drink, it's that serious. By the time her body feels like it NEEDS the oxygen, it's too late, that's her body's distress signal.

Matt is also correct about the composition of air, only a small amount of "air" is actually oxygen, that's a common misconception. Her doctor prescribed the "oxygen" to her so her body can get more of the oxygen that it needs.

Explain to her that when she is out of breath, that's her body's distress signal telling her that it is out of oxygen....and not just at that moment. The oxygen deficit builds up over time and finally reaches a breaking point when she becomes short of breath. So if she takes her oxygen all the time she can keep the level of oxygen in her blood constant and consistent instead of the roller coaster ride she's currently on.

Use the example of food or water,... what she's doing now is the equivelent of taking one sip of water only occasionally throughout the day and waiting until she's dangerously dehydrated days later before drinking a full glass. That can NOT be good for her body, it's causing unnecessary wear and tear on her cells and organs.Health Question & Answer

Oxygen IS a medication to be used as ordered by the doctor. You just wouldn't stop taking blood pressure medication or insulin because you feel like you don't need it. Oxygen is the same way. If the doc ordered it he has test results that it is needed. She needs to use it until another test shows she doesn't need it. The company that provides the oxygen can do theses tests but beware, they are getting paid for the oxygen so they really don't want a test that shows she doesn't need it.

Now, what happens if she needs it and doesn't use it. All our cells need oxygen to survive. With out proper amounts of oxygen, the will start dying. All are important but the ones in the brain, heart, kidneys and liver are really important. You need these cells to be alive and working well.

The oxygen in the house vs. outside is the same, about 21%. If she feels like she has to go outside to get oxygen, she is mostly craving moving air as in a breeze. A fan inside may help.

Oxygen is a drug, and it can be use too much. So again she needs to use it as ordered by her doctor.

Look at this and it may help
