Answers:
Well, the descriptions from Slowhand and Kimberley C are pretty accurate except they didn't tell you that you can tell your doctor in advance that you don't want sedation.

I have had this don't multiple times and never been sedated. My doctor wouldn't swear that there were no risks from sedation. For me, mandatory sedation was a deal killer. One doctor let me walk away; but, the next one agreed. I agree to the IV being in for hydration and "just in case something goes wrong". Any pain level (or discomfort) is mostly from the air they inject and in my case also when the scope kinked in the descending colon. Several times pain level hit a 7 out of 10 but that was only for brief episodes. The discomfort is experience on the journey to the cecum. There is no discomfort on the way out or when the polyps were removed. I was able to watch (and remember) the entire procedure as if it was the Discovery Channel. Too bad the nurses forgot to tell you that Versed is also known as "the date rape drug". It is possible you will be aware of the pain/discomfort, you are unable to communicate that you are in pain and then you usually forget about it because of the amnesiac effect of Versed.

The choice of sedation or not is yours. If you are anal phobic or have no pain tolerance, then the reward of forgeting everything may outweigh the risks. In my case the reward of driving myself to and from the hospital and being alert the rest of the day outweighs the risk of the side effects of sedation. The choice is yours just do it with knowledge in lieu of blind faith. Sedation or not; it is a very valuable procedure in fighting colon cancer.Health Question & Answer

I will try to answer your questions.
1. Prep - Preps are done different ways. You will take a laxative the night before. Probably Mag. Sulfate. Sometimes they will have you take a suppository the morning of the scope just to make sure. You will also be on clear liquids for dinner the night before and have nothing after midnight.

2. You will have a hospital gown on, with no underwear.

3. They will start an IV or a lock. You will be given some sedation - Versed, maybe some Demerol. No it does not hurt. You may have a little oxygen on during the procedure. Depends on the physician.

4. The procedure is done as an outpatient so once you are awake, you can go home.Health Question & Answer

Oh yeh glad you are going this procedure is very simple.

First day before procedure you eat a good breakfast then clear liquids after that for the entire day ---(clear- h2o - gingerale- juice black coffee- broth yellow jello etc) avoid RED and GRAPE juices -- at around 4 pm that night you need to begin your prep. Usually thisis a oral prep called fleets phosopho soda- this is very potent and tastes really gross (like ocean water) yes even the lemon lime flavor-- mis it with small fluid - and ddrink in about 1-2 hours you should begin to move your bowels- and then every hour you need to drink fluids- by 10pm you should stop moving your bowels -- you go to bed
am of procedure you get up ewarly and drink 1/2 bottle of prep and then poop a liitle more--- then you still do not eat or drink u head to hospital or clinic to have procedure done - you need to bring a ride to drive you home-
then once there you register and then change yes you have to wear a gown and have underwear off-(we need aceess if you will) the nurses are great they will get you blanket and cover you up- they will put an IV in your arm and hook up IV - when ready you will go to procedure room and you will meet Dr - you will be put on heart monitior oxygen and a bp cuff and finger gadet (checks your oxygen level)
the dr will come and talk to you - slow;y they will give you a med throught he IV you will get sleepy Dr will tell you roll over on you rleft side - and you will fall to sleep the Dr takes the long flexible scope and insert it to the rectum ( the scope is long) but VERY small - smaller then your stool daily--- - the Dr inserts into rectum and then infaltes a little air in the colon to see the wall better - on a TV screen he looks for cancers and polyps (growths) if he sees any they will remove he slowly withdraws the scope and then you go to recovery room the nurse will wake you- you roll over to right side and pass gas then then you get up- and go home- you will feel fine no pain just cramps at time the more gas you pass the better you feel----
you will feel normal but you can't drive because of the sedation=
this procedure is done with dignity- the Dr keeps you covered
it is so important---

I am glad you are having it done----

if you have more .?'s jsut ask me I will be happy to answereHealth Question & Answer
