Answers:
Cancer can be hereditary or it can be caused by lifestyle and environmental exposures. It also just happens to some people.

Cancer is not contagious! You can not "catch" cancer, however patients with cancer have weakened immune systems and need to be careful about what they are exposed to. Health Question & Answer

No, cancer isn't contagious.

Nobody knows what causes most cancers - talk of it being caused by diet or other lifestyle factors is wishful thinking 'blaming the victim' is often easier than accepting that cancer is a largely random disease that can affect any of us at any time.

Smoking is linked to lung and some other cancers, excessive sun exposure to skin cancers and the sexually transmitted HPV virus to cervical cancer. Other than that, we're pretty much in the dark.

Cancer is rarely hereditary - fewer than 10% of all cancers are hereditary in fact. For some reason people answering that question on YA often state that breast and colon cancer are hereditary; like other cancers, they rarely are. Only 5 - 10% of breast cancer cases and fewer than 5% of colon cancer cases are hereditary.Health Question & Answer

While some animal cancers are contagious, no form of human cancer is contagious. Certain contagious illnesses can, however, cause cancer in humans. These illnesses are not passed through cancerous cells but through the viruses causing the cancer. Additionally, some behaviors are thought to be contagious, or at least may cause exposure to cancer causing agents. In this case, the cancer cells are not contagious, but the behaviors causing cancer may be more likely to occur in family groups, like smoking. Read more: http://www.wisegeek.com/is-cancer-contag...

Health Question & Answer

You can't catch cancer from another person, but it is conceivable that you can catch a virus from another person that would lead to you developing cancer. The cancer that works that way is cervical cancer. Its often caused by the Human Papilloma Virus which is a sexually transmitted virus. So, while the guy who infects you with HPV doesn't have cancer, I guess you could say that you caught cancer from him. They have that new vaccine out, Gardasil that is effective against some of the strains of the HPV virus.

Some people are hereditarily pre-disposed to cancer (breast cancer and colon cancer work this way). Some are environmental and some they just have no clue how they're triggered.Health Question & Answer

Its not contagious. It can be hereditary but not all the time. It just happens. Women who dont have at least one child are more likely to get cervical cancer. Chances are if your mom had breast cancer you might get it later too. Thats why teens andwomen should check themselves for breast cancer often.Health Question & Answer
