Very easily.

Chest infections and pneumonia are common complications of anyone who has had surgery and is immobile.

We normally take a few deep breaths every minute but if we are immobile or sore we don't always do this. also after aesthetic the lungs can become 'lazy'. This can cause secretions to ''pool' in the lungs. Additionally if bacteria enter the lungs it can breed in these pools then infection can set in.

The chances of getting pneumonia post op increase when someone is elderly, smokes, drinks regularly or already has an impaired immune system.

The most likely way the bacteria has got in is through your father putting his hand to his mouth or from another person in close contact. Really visitors should remove outdoor clothes and wash their hands before hugging or touching relatives.

It is unlikely to be the hospital's fault.

I wish him all the best, my dad had a hi replacement a couple of years ago, fortunately with no complications, but I know how you feel.

For anyone else reading this whose relative is about to have orthopaedic surgery there is a pneumonia vaccine available to anyone over 65 or with an impaired immune system.

Health Question & Answer

This was a common occurence in cases of long-stay orthopaedic patients due to lack of mobility after an op,but with newer methods of nursing--getting patients up soon after the op and physiotherapy(chest exercises-breathing etc to clear the lungs)it has become less common.
Aspiration of foreign material (often the stomach contents) into the lung can be a result of disorders that affect normal swallowing, decreased or absent gag reflex (in unconscious, or semi-conscious individuals).
( Old age, dental problems, use of sedative drugs, anesthesia, coma, are also causal or contributing factors.)
The response of the lungs depends upon the characteristics and amount of the aspirated substance.
The more acidic the material, the greater the degree of lung injury, although this may not necessary lead to pneumonia.
The injured lungs can become infected with multiple species of bacteria
A collection of pus may form in the lung.Health Question & Answer

I was in a hospital to visit someone about six months ago. Not even one considered a govt. run dump and I could not believe how terrible it was. Hopefully I just have a heart attack and die when it is my time to go. That was like a torture hell not a place to get better. Everyone that walks in probably ends up somehow messed up. Health Question & Answer

I know I know you go into the hospital for one thing and then ya catch something there that YOU have to pay for. Usually its staph infection.
what can ya do.? Ya shouldnt have to pay for something you didnt have before ya went in the hospital.Health Question & Answer

hospitals are cold to cut down on germs so the operating area is much colder than that,so it is easy to get pneumonia from that and laying still for hours.Health Question & Answer

Hospitals... although very sterile have a habit of illness being spread. If you're father is older and his immune system is weak then it's a lot easier to pick something up. Health Question & Answer

It is actually quite common. They call in a "nosocomial infection". It's when someone goes to the hospital for one thing and ends up catching something else while they are still there.Health Question & Answer
