Question: If there is an abnormality in a mammogram, what is the likelihood that it's cancer.?
Answers:
If they ask you to repeat your mammogram in six months. it could have been an area that was wasn't quite clear . This is common in women with dense breast. The area may be so minute that they need the time to see if it has changed. Ask your doctor about what type of abnormality it is. Listen for their answer as to size, and shape, does it have irregular borders. Is it consistent with a cyst or fibroadenoma both of which are common findings. If you have a family history of breast cancer, I would certainly be mointered closley. We use to tell our patients , we will tell you when ot is time to worry, otherwise try to relax and wait it out. I have had a few abnormal mammograms but it is not cancer. Mammograms can detect many different things, such as cysts, which is what I have. Most people do not have cancer but it is always safer to follow up to find out exactly what is showing up on the mammogram.Health Question & Answer

Statistically, about 10-20% of abnormal mammograms have cancer in the biopsy. Health Question & Answer
