Does Rotavirus cause death ?!?!

Question: Does Rotavirus cause death .?!.?
My niece is 6 months old and she was diagnosed with Rotavirus two days ago !!

The doctor gave her two medications for temperature and vomit, and he told her parents to give her plenty of salt water ..

She is better now "According to her mother", but I'm afraid she's just lying to me to make me feel better ..

I don't wanna sound weird or anything, but is she in danger :( .?!Health Question & Answer

Answers:
no -- your neice is at no risk of death.
rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea in her age group, and any pediatrician is capable of taking care of it with ease.

The figures on death cited by another respondent in this thread are ENTIRELY misleading. You have to understand that rotavirus does cause lots and lots of deaths worldwide. (median 440,000 per year). But almost all of those occur in VERY poor countries with little to no health care. (roughly 85% of the deaths are in the poorest countries of the world, just like cholera, because the children don't have access to simple IV fluid hydration which would save their lives).

How many deaths occur in the USA per year.?
30 -- THIRTY -- not thousands, not millions.

In the USA, care of rotavirus is absoultely routine, and you should be reassured that under the care of any competent pediatrician, your child is in no danger at all.Health Question & Answer

Rotavirus is typically not fatal. Its actually a very common (infects almost all children by age 5, sometimes more than once) virus that young children can get and it usually presents with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Like many childhood illnesses, it typically runs its course, the child feels horrible for a while but then it slowly resolves. The best thing to do in such situations is to keep the baby/child well hydrated to make sure that there is adequate fluid replacement to make up for what is lost in vomit and diarrhea. This can be a little tricky in infants since their bodies' ability to regulate water and salt balance is not as good as an older child or adults would be. It sounds though that everything is being done right and I am not surprised that your niece is feeling better if she is following the plan you outlined. She should be just fine.Health Question & Answer

not likely unless she gets extremly dehydrated. It's a very common virus in infants and children and most children get it several times. It's nothing to worry about if she's been to the doctor and is being treated. Health Question & Answer

More than 500,000 children under five years of age die from rotavirus infection each year. Don't worry until the baby is severely ill, though.Health Question & Answer
