It's very hard being diagnosed with diabetes, without all the rubbish that people are spouting.

Is he supposed to drink nothing but water... no caffeine, no sweeteners.

Rubbish.

Sweeteners are fine. Some of them do affect blood sugar, but it is very mild, and varies from person to person. So let your dad know he can have sweeteners.

Caffeine is fine, it does have a detrimental effect on control, but again, it is minor, and certainly not worth the sacrifice and enjoyment of all caffeinated drinks forever.

Remember, he has this for the rest of his life.
The entire family will benefit from the healthy food.
All you really need to do is make adjustments to whatever people eat now. No need for special recipes or food.
Simple changes can make all the difference.

Low fat is good. Switch to low fat versions of his favourite foods, or go for vegetable based versions of pasta dishes, rather than cream, same goes for curry.
Wholemeal bread, pasta if he likes it.
Sugar free squash, fizzy drinks, sweeteners, try splenda, it's the only one i've found that doesn't mess up my sugars at all, plus no aftertaste or furry mouth.
Plenty of good carbs, vegetables.

There is nothing forbidden, except that horrendous 'diabetic' chocolate, ice cream rubbish.

Desserts can be great, just bake reduced sugar/sweetenedversions. There are loads of good websites.

Remember, this is forever. Follow his diet, and if you can't do it, then neither should he.
He should still enjoy all of his food. Health Question & Answer

If he is treated with insulin, then he will adjust his insulin with the amount of carbs he eats.
Beware of foods labeled sugar free - they still have carbohydrates and caloies.
High carb foods are bad for diabetics, so even too much pasta can be an issue. Lean meats and veggies are the best.
Your dad should have met with a dietician or nutritionist, ask him if he must follow a restricted diet.
If he has type 2, many people with type 2 do well following the South Beach or Atkins diets.Health Question & Answer

You'll need to watch out for a lot of breads, candies, and other sweets. also watch out for soft drinks: Even the diet ones can make your blood sugar go bonkers.

Black coffee is fine, if your father is a coffee drinker. So are most fruits and vegetables. My mother- who is also diabetic- enjoys a bit of good dark chocolate now and then.

There are sites with a lot of diabetic recipes on them, and a dietitian should be able to advise you about your dad.
