It's easy for people to say "eat fresh fruits and vegs every day and lean meats, etc.", but if you don't have the money then you have to fill your belly with whatever you can afford.
Now, we're in the same boat, trying to figure out how to afford healthy alternatives and still feel like we're eating. And, let's face it, when you don't have much money, it's easy to fill up on pasta and rice etc. There are whole studies done on how the poor are often the most overweight because of the kinds of foods eaten. Especially if you can't afford quality foods, then you tend to oversalt, overbutter, etc. to make up for the original taste.
One of our biggest cravings is for chips and sodas which, obviously, is terrible for us. We've started buying Cheerios, low-salt pretzels, unsalted crackers, etc. and dividing them up into small ziplock bags ahead of time so that we can have a handy snack to grab. Instead of sodas, we've gone to all sugar-free koolaids and tea and refilling water bottles with them so that they're there cold in the fridge. The sugar-free sodas are okay sometimes but they have such a bad aftertaste to me.
Now, as for your meds, check locally with your hospital or area help centers to see if you can get any of those meds from the company. Our local free clinic and our area hospital both have programs to help you apply for such aid, especially if you need insulin.
also, Walmart has most of the blood pressure and diabetic meds on their $4 plans.
What do you take.?
We take Atenolol, HCTZ, Metformin, and several others between the two of us and they are all on their plan which is usually $4 or $8 for a month's supply, depending on dosage.
Now, back to food, beans ofcourse can be used as a substitute for meat as can eggs, but you have to be careful with how much salt you put on them.
We've started using alsoSalt and Mrs. Dash instead of salt and buying canned vegs that have "no salt added" on the labels.
We've also decided to just plant a couple big tubs for things like tomatoes and such that can be grown inside.
Dropping your salt intake can make your blood pressure so much better.
Are you on a diaretic, i.e. something that makes you pee off the extra fluid.? If not, then look at natural alternatives like vitamin supplements to help that but be careful about how you use them.
The first thing to do would be to make sure that you have adequate health care.
Call the "211" number and they can refer you to local organizations in your area that can help with health care or medications.
Best of luck.Health Question & Answer

Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, pasta w/ no-salt-added sauces.... Stay away from a lot of processed foods b/c they will have a lot of sodium, which can make your high blood pressure worse. also, stay away from simple sugars like sugary cereals, regular bread, etc... they will cause a quick spike in blood sugar.

also, get out and get some exercise! Even just 30 minutes 3x/week is a good start!Health Question & Answer

Eat more vegies and fruits instead of pastas, potatoes, or processed food ( they are more salty and bad for high blood pressure). Health Question & Answer

Eat balanced meals with whole grains. Don't eat late. Try an Omega 3 supplement.Health Question & Answer
