How come they have a vaccine for HPV and Not HIV?!

Question: How come they have a vaccine for HPV and Not HIV.?
As I understand it they are both a virus. Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You are right, they are both viruses.

But HIV is a virus that mutates ALOT (like the Influenza virus, which is why we don't have a really good Influenza vaccine, i.e. the "flu shot" doesn't protect you from all strains of Influenza).

The HPV vaccine only protects against certain strains of HPV (6, 11, 18,,,), not all types. So imagine an HIV vaccine that protected against "some types" of HIV, but not all. Wouldn't be that great of a vaccine, would it.?Health Question & Answer

Justin, please know your facts before spreading false information. Just because a person's viral load is undetectable does not mean they are cured. The virus is still there, Magic is still on medications, and will be the rest of his life, it is a fact that some people do tend to live a long life now after infection, but you know what, each person is different. 10 years of undetectable levels is no huge feat any more, but to say he is cured is flat out lie, and could be a deadly one at that. The only ones who have been "cured" were never actually infected to begin with, he was never that sick to begin with as he found out long before he would have shown any major symptoms.
As for the question, HPV and HIV are two totally different types of viruses. also the vaccine for HPV only stops a few of the types that are believed to cause cervical cancer. A cold is caused by a virus as well, funny they have not created a cure of vaccine for the common cold either. Health Question & Answer

Roberto's right. Though they are thinking that the HPV vaccine provides partial immunity to other types of HPV, just not full immunity.

HIV is a retrovirus. It takes a piece of the host cell's membrane with it,w hich makes it harder to identify and attack. It's also an RNA retrovirus, which means it has a very high mutation rate. This makes it hard for the immune system to attack it, which makes it hard for us to create a vaccine for it. According to the guy who won the nobel prize this year for studying HIV, a vaccine isn't all that far off.

HPV is a nonencapsulated DNA virus. It has a low mutation rate and it doesn't have a membrane around it. This makes it exposed and easy to get. The reason HPV becomes a chronic infection is that it gets inside cells and basically hides there, invisible. So by the time the immune system has antibodies to it, it's hidden. By giving a person antibodies and CTLs against it from a vaccination before they're infected, when they really run into the virus these are all ready, and can get it before it hides in various cells.Health Question & Answer

HIV is a virus that mutates frequently, so a vaccine or medication would only cover some strains of the virus. The frequent mutation is the main reason why there is still no cure for HIV.Health Question & Answer

They have a cure for hiv and aids, they just don't want to supply americans with it. Look at Magic Johnson, he had HIV pretty bad. After about 10 years it seems as if it disappeared.Health Question & Answer
