I have a gland on the left side of my throat which started hurting on Wednesday, and when I went to the doctor he diagnosed me with mono. I've been laying in bed and taking massive doses of vitamin c, but now my glands have swollen even bigger and have spread up the side of my neck. It's huge! I can't lay down without crying since the pain is unbearable, and it's hard to breathe. I took 2 advils 2 hours ago, but it didn't seem to do anything. Is this normal.? I'm going back to the doctor on Monday, but before then, is there anything I can do to help the pain.?

Hot packs will help the body push the blood through the area and flush it. Keep super amounts of fluid flowing through you. It sounds like you may have something else going on as well such as tonsilities or strep. Gargle with warm to very warm salt water that will help from the inside and the salt helps to draw the infection. Looks like you may be in for a couple of nights in the recliner. I've been there. I've had it twice and once I had it with pneumonia. Be careful of your abdominal area. No excertion, no physical activity until doc gives you the go ahead. Mono comes from the Epstein-Barr virus. Check out www.webmd.com or if your insurance company has a nurse line call their 800 # and have them run through your symptoms. You should probably go to the ER.
