After getting treatment for latent TB, can you still develop the disease?!

Question: After getting treatment for latent TB, can you still develop the disease.?
Answers:
yes.

taking INH , the standard treatment for latent TB, yeilds the following decrease in the chance of active disease later:

6 months of INH : 69% reduction
12 months of INH: 93% reduction.

But if you really look at all the data in graph form, you can see that by a nine-month duration of treatment, you've really gotten all the benefit. The extra 3 months after that does almost no additional benefit. (see reference).

what all this means, is that no matter how long you take your treatment, you cannot get down to a risk of zero. There will always be SOME risk that you'll reactivate later.

Now, having said that, lets step back to reality. I've never seen this happen ever in my training nor in my practice (that's about 27 years total, and I've never read of a case. I know they are out there - but it's unlikely that I'll ever see it in my life - it's that rare.Health Question & Answer
