Someone I know has a Group B Strep infection. Can my children get the disease by being around this person?!

Question: Someone I know has a Group B Strep infection. Can my children get the disease by being around this person.?
Answers:
it is just not important.

we do not quarantine people carrying group B strep.
we do not track down household partners nor sexual contacts of people with GBS infections.
we do not treat family contacts either...

with good reason -- the mere presence of the organism on your skin means nothing, unless you are a pregnant female. You need to realize that most people carry this organism on their skin, where is causes no disease at all. It only causes disease when it gets IN your body.

All diabetics carry this germ on their skin. Means nothing.

You should have no worries at all about your children - they can have unliimited contact with this other person.

You don't need to worry about "catching" GBS just like you don't have to worry about "catching" E. coli --- because both are normal flora of the human body - we all have them. We only care about "treating" GBS or E. coli when it is causing a disease state.

The issue of GBS in pregnancy is a whole different topic which I'll leave to another thread (:-)Health Question & Answer

Usually with bacteria like this, your child cannot pick it up unless they are physically touching the wound of the other kid. If the other kid has it wrapped up, there is little or no chance that they will get it.Health Question & Answer
