Home nurses couldn't do anything except remind her to take meds and maybe chart progression of the disease. Unfortunately the disease is progressive, and they have good days and bad days. Go with the flow. Continue to talk to her, even if you have to remind her of the same thing day after day. Be extra aware of medications around the house, doors being locked, car keys in sight... anything that she may be able to harm herself with should be kept far away. Just reinforce safety!

There should be a local alzheimer's support system in your area. Local nursing homes could help give you info. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

First and most important is to make sure she takes her medication as prescribed. You might also have to make sure she eats properly and has good hygiene. Alzheimer patients often forget the simple daily routines. You can talk to her about things you did in the past and share your fondest memories. It's imperative that you have a lot of patience with her. She might ask the same questions over and over again. Respond to her with love and respect. Tell her often who you are and how much you love her. Encourage her to do things for herself and help her as much as possible. Praise her for her accomplishments, but don't treat her as a child. Caring for your grandmother is going to be hard on you both physically and emotionally but something you will never regret. May God bless you and your grandmother.Health Question & Answer

I went through this several years ago with my grandmother. With proper medications, sometimes your grandmother will seen fine. We had my grandmother in a nursing home that was completely covered by medicare. You may want to look into that. When having conversations with my grandmother, I always talked about her childhood. She could tell you everything about the past, but nothing about the present. also, never confuse her. If she tells you the sky is green, just agree with her. This disease is harder for the families than it is for the patient. Just keep her happy. Talk to her doctor about books you can read. It really helps to get an understanding of the disease. Keep an eye on her too. Alzhiemer's patients tend to wander. You may want to consider a bracelet with her name and address. They might forget names, but they do not forget things like opening a door.
