My 8 year old has Sinia Bifida Occulta. ?!

Question: My 8 year old has Sinia Bifida Occulta. .?
I'm hoping there are some parents or people with the condition who will let me know what we're in for. My child struggles with motor skills.

I've checked out some websites, but they either minimize the diagnosis or only focus on severe cases of open lesions.

Can anyone relate and share some insight.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Depending on the level of the Spina Bifida, a child can be totally wheelchair bound and need to self catheterize him/herself to being able to walk with the help of braces at hips/knees and ankles and loftstrand crutches to being able to walk without any assistive devices. There will always be weakness in the lower extremities if the insult is at a low level such as L4-5 versus in the upper lumbar to low thoracic region. The lower the level of insult, the better the strength and motor skills are. I am assuming because you just found out that your childs level of insult is low. I hope this is helpful to you. Have you looked into the Mayo Clinics website or the Spina Bifida Association. I do not know where you live, but there should be some place(hospital) that has a Spina Bifida Clinic. They should have an abundance of information and the appropriate specialists to help you and answer any questions.Health Question & Answer

My daughters consultant told me 18 months ago that my now 7 year old has SPO however the only effect it as on her, is she cant control her bladder all the time. Now i looked at websites and read various things that spoke of only severe outcomes. My advice to you is to talk it over with your consultant/gp as it effects everyone differently.

Sorry i cant be much help but i wanted to tell you that such a condtion can have very little (or no) effect.
