My 8 year old has Sinia Bifida Occulta. ?!

Depending on the level of the Spina Bifida, a child can be totally wheelchair bound and need to self catheterize him/herself to being able to walk with the help of braces at hips/knees and ankles and loftstrand crutches to being able to walk without any assistive devices. There will always be weakness in the lower extremities if the insult is at a low level such as L4-5 versus in the upper lumbar to low thoracic region. The lower the level of insult, the better the strength and motor skills are. I am assuming because you just found out that your childs level of insult is low. I hope this is helpful to you. Have you looked into the Mayo Clinics website or the Spina Bifida Association. I do not know where you live, but there should be some place(hospital) that has a Spina Bifida Clinic. My daughters consultant told me 18 months ago that my now 7 year old has SPO however the only effect it as on her, is she cant control her bladder all the time. Now i looked at websites and read various things that spoke of only severe outcomes. My advice to you is to talk it over with your consultant/gp as it effects everyone differently.

Sorry i cant be much help but i wanted to tell you that such a condtion can have very little (or no) effect.
