Pulmonologist or Allergist?!

Question: Pulmonologist or Allergist.?
Not sure who I should be seeing more for my asthma. My asthma seems to get worse during the same time each year and acts up during rainstorms or changes in temperature. I was recently sent to the hospital because I couldn't control an attack. My pulmonologist has me on preventative medicine but this is the 2nd attack I've had this month.

Should I be seeing an allergist more or a pulmonologist more.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I went through this with my 7 year old (she was younger at the time though). What it is is allergy induced asthma. Your allergies will act up causing you not to be able to breath. Now I had her going to the Allergist and we did all the scratch tests and all. She started getting the allergy shots once a week for what she was allergic to the most. During this time she was on nasal sprays and the nebulizer with Pulmicort and Albuterol. also she was on Claritin and I forgot the other medicines name. Along with the allergist I brought her to the Pulmonologist. He told me to trust him and stop the allergy shots and not to go back there. I thought about it for a while and I took his advice. He put her on an inhaler twice a day and an albuterol inhaler when needed. She takes the nasal spray when it is allergy season (like now) but when it is not she will use Saline solution. She has not had a problem since we went to the Pulmonologist months ago.

Sorry for the whole story but I figured it would help more then just a stranger saying to go to one or the other. Look around for a Pulmonologist who knows about allergies. ;-)Health Question & Answer

Both of them should be able to provide good care for your condition.

If you've had two attacks in one month though, it's possible the preventative isn't working well, and you should be switched to a different one, or a new one should be added.

What are you on.? Is it one of the inhaled steroids like Flovent.? Or Advair.?Health Question & Answer
