If I go on Accutane, do I have to go on birth control because I would really prefer not to.?!

Question: If I go on Accutane, do I have to go on birth control because I would really prefer not to..?
Answers:
You will need to go on birth control. Each month you will have to fill out an online questionaire and state which TWO types of birth control you are using --- abstinence can be one of them, but you need another type.

The reason is that accutane can cause severe fetal abnormalities if a pregnant woman takes it. I understand that you want to wait to marriage but the FDA has decided on very specific rules to prevent birth defects and one of them is that all girls/women have to use 2 types of birth control and NOT get pregnant.

Accutane is very very effective. Most common side effects are dry skin, chapped lips. There is a risk of mood swings - your doctor will provide a lot of education to you and your family about what to do if your mood changes. In addition, you will need monthly blood tests to test for liver function.

All these precautions are in place to help protect the patient. Again though it is very effectiveHealth Question & Answer

Yes you should go on Birth Control if you are serious about Accutane.

It causes deformities if by chance you would get pregnant.

Most doctors will not put you on accutane if you are not on birth control.

Accutane also causes severe depression and suicidal thoughts... You might want to think this completely through before deciding for sure that this is what you are going to do. Especially if you have family history of depression.Health Question & Answer

Quote from the Roche company who make Accutane ;

DO NOT GET PREGNANT

I can't imagine why you would say you'd really prefer not to use birth control. Either you are going to be responsible, or you are not. If you are not, then don't use Accutane. Some things in life are black and white. This is one of them. Health Question & Answer
