Today I found out I have a heart murmur.?!

Question: Today I found out I have a heart murmur..?
I have been sick lately and I went to the doctor and she told me I have a heart murmur. My mother has that too. And, normally it's not serious.

But sense learning this, all day I feel weak and my chest hurts. I know it's all in my head. But the though is really bothering me.

I can't stop thinking about it. Every time I do something, I get an ache in my heart area, and it creeps me out. I wish she didn't tell me. My mind is taking over and making me feel worse. Health Question & Answer

hi iam not trying to scare you but give you facts related to me.i was about your age when i found out i had a murmur.at that time i didn't have health insurance and the dr. i was seeing at the health dpt. chose to ignore it.when i was 26 i had my son and shortly after giving birth started having severe chest pains and was rushed to the er and was seen by a cardiologist who did an echo were the camera is put down your throat and was told that the murmur was caused by a congenital heart defect that should've been caught at birth.i think you should follow up with a specialist because that will help put your mind at ease.Health Question & Answer

It depends on what the cause of your heart murmur is. There are numerous different reasons. The different sounds each makes can point at the cause. Some are benign and others show a serious heart defect. Most likely as you are already 21 years old it is benign, but if your doctor thinks you should be seen by a cardiologist then that may be a good idea. If he doesn't, ask them why and see what the reason is. You are just worrying and focussing upon your new knowledge - if the pain wasn't there before it is highly unlikely to manifest right when you find out about your murmur, so you are correct in thinking it is in your head. Have you had an ECG or any other tests yet.? Try not to worry! I know it's easier said than done - ask to know why you have the murmur and see what the doc suggests.Health Question & Answer

Since you are just finding out now, it is likely not that serious. You should have it checked out by a cardiologist to be sure. What you are feeling now, is probably in your head like you said. I find the best way to get past those types of feelings is to find something else to focus on. Some kind of hobby. Health Question & Answer

I know how easy it is to focus on a diagnosis like this and make yourself sick with worry. Heart murmurs are heard often especially in young people (which I think you are). They mean nothing and usually go away. I was told I had one when I was a teenager and no one has heard it since. THat has been quite a while! Heart murmurs are only a problem if you have other signs of heart disease. Trust me, you are too young for that.
Take care of yourself, you'll be fine.Health Question & Answer

How serious your heart murmur is depends partly on what caused it.

The person who told you that you are too young for other heart disease is dead, dead, dead wrong. No one is too young for heart disease!
