Type 1 diabetic... Insulin pump needle help!!!?!

Question: Type 1 diabetic... Insulin pump needle help!!!.?
I've been using the insulin pump for just over a year now and I'm only thirteen and I have gross needle scars all over my stomach from inserting so many insulin pump infusion set needles into my stomach. I tried to input the tube in in different places but it really hurts other then my stomach and I really want to do something about the scars... and is there a way to ease the pain when putting in needles.? It's the worst thing for me...Health Question & Answer

i'm so sorry you're having a rough time, dear. your stomach has less nerve ending than other places. are you using the absolute tiniest needle.? 27g or 29g.? you could ice the skin for a few seconds before inserting the needle. also, if you hold the skin tight- like you are stretching it- that will help with the insertion pain

securing the insertion point and the first few inches of tubing will help avoid jarring of the needle and reduce additional scarring, but i really don't know if it can be completely avoided.

As a diabetic myself, I would not want to use a machine that has to be attached inside my body. It is gross.

Since you are 13, you may be smart enough to get off the pump and use other conventional methods of getting insulin. The pen. You will have to be responsible enough to give yourself shots more often. The shots can be administered in different parts of your body, not the same places you've been using for the pump.

See about getting off the pump and on the pen. I believe you can do it and be much happier about being the responsible person you can be while living with diabetes.Health Question & Answer

Personally, I feel the scars are a small sacrifice for good diabetic control, but I'm also 35 and not interested in vanity most of the time.

You can try putting the site in other locations. Many use their upper arm, their thighs and I use my back a lot. As for the scars, they generally fade over time but if you seem to have several that don't, talk to your doctor about how to lighten them.

I don't know what to suggest about the pain. I don't find mine to be incredibly painful. As most, they sting for a minute. I know there are numbing agents you can apply to your skin first, so you may want to look into that.

When I get frustrated with my pump and having to change sites, I remember that it's a heck of a lot better than 4 or more daily injections.Health Question & Answer

with the scars, yeah i have them too and my doctor told me i could put that mederma cream on them and that they should start to fade away. well i did and some are faded and others are still there, which really sparks conversation when i go to a pool party or somethin. :) uhmm with the needles, yep that was the thing i couldn`t seem to overcome at all, but they do have this perscription cream that they use at children`s hospitals when giving kids IV`s, it like numbs your skin. my aunt is a nurse at a children`s hospital and uses this on patients. i am 15 and i used it. :)Health Question & Answer
