Diabetes is now considered to be an autoimmune disease. Juvenile diabetes is different than adult onset. The pancreas doesn't make enough insulin which drops or regulates blood sugar to normal range. Adults get diabetes from lifestyle... diet, inactivity, overweight. It can be controlled with diet and increased activity. Uncontrolled , risk eyesight, kidney problems with dialysis, poor wound healing, amputations, heart problems and stroke or death.
, Health Question & Answer

Type 1 diabetes is usually in childhood and type 2 usually develops in adulthood. Type 1 the body does not produce insulin. No one causes it to themselves. In type 2 the body produces some insulin but it does not produce enough and does not use it right.

Some people think that eating too much sugar causes diabetes. This is not a direct cause and effect. Being overweight can bring type 2 on sooner if there is a predisposition to it. If it runs in your family, you are at risk.Health Question & Answer

You get born with a predisposition towards it, then if you only ever eat like a rabbit (lots of vegetables, few fats, NO sugar) well, it may never start up...but if you eat normally then it MAY start up, but if you start living on snickers bars everyday, then uh oh, then it definitiely will!

So if you have this in your family...eat normally, dont gain weight and keep it, get regular exercise...and then just dont worry, thats doing the best you can.

also...diabetes can skip a generation(so if your mom is diabetic, you may not be (MAY not be), but then your kid might.Health Question & Answer

Its genetic and sometimes yes you can do things to increase your chances of getting it with your diet and exercise but it always genetic usually. Its not from eating sweets either. Its not from over eatting. Its a disease that is already there and some people in the world are fortunate enough to eat all the sweets they want and their bodys handle it better, it doesn't effect them as it would a diabetic and even fruits may have to be avoided b/c of the natural sugars. diabetics can be under weight or over weight....also It causes u to be overweight and its not always their fault.Health Question & Answer

Sometimes it's passed on through genetics, other times it's from people not putting down the damn Twinkies, so it varies and also depends on what type it is, as well.Health Question & Answer

It could happen both ways. It can be genetic. If not, you can cause it by not balancing a good diet, exercising, and keeping fit.Health Question & Answer

both, actually, it just depends.Health Question & Answer
