Why do doctors say it.? because they know no better and are too lazy to find out. The human body has at least 32 ways (mechanisms) of regulating the level of blood-sodium, and excreting any excesses, keeping it 'right' for purpose.

What does potassium do.? -It's an element whose presence (like that of sodium) is essential to life.
