Why does alcohol give me insomnia?!

Question: Why does alcohol give me insomnia.?
Alcohol used to make me sleepy, drunk, etc. Now, even with one beer I either..

1. Get sleepy at first, sleep for 1-2 hours. And then am suddendly awoken to being full of energy and unable to sleep.
2. It keeps me up totally. This is with even one beer. So I have stopped drinking altogether.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Alcohol inhibits rapid eye movement, which is the stage of sleep that makes us feel rested. Disturbance to REM sleep, combined with the dehydration caused by alcohol, can cause insomnia. That might account for the first scenario.

The second scenario, in which you can't get to sleep at all after one beer, sounds a bit more unusual. You may be reacting to one of the other ingredients in the beer. Or you may simply have a sensitivity to alcohol which affects you in this way.

Different people react to substances in different ways. I knew someone who always fell asleep after taking Ecstasy (MDMA), which is usually a stimulant.

You could try different kinds of alcoholic drinks to see if anything works better for you. But you may find you are in the unfortunate position of being unable to drink without this side effect.
