Suddenly allergic to my gold ring?!

Question: Suddenly allergic to my gold ring.?

Iv been wearing my white gold ring for about 3 years now.
I have always worn it only taking it off when i have a shower or bath. Its real gold it was my mums and she gave it to me iv never had a problem before but a few weeks ago a had a red itchy band around my ring finger i took the ring off for a couple of weeks until it went away.
I assumed it was a burn or something, It looked like a burn it also peeled as it healed. After the rash had totally gone a left it a couple more weeks and last night before i went to bed i put it back on.
I woke up in the middle of the night with my baby boy and noticed the red band on my finger was back. It was really itchy and starting to blister! I
v taken the ring off now but does this mean im allergic to it.? Can i not wear it again.?
also its strange because iv also been wearing another gold ring on my other hand for a year (never been taken off) and its fine. I dont understand how i can be allergic to one gold ring and not another...
Any advice.? ThanksHealth Question & Answer

Sounds like you do have an allergy. You might want to see a dermatologist. One tip I've seen for dealing with jewelry allergies is to paint a thin coat of colorless nail polish on them, to provide a seal that protects your skin from direct contact. You may wish to try that if you don't have time to take it to a jeweler (a jeweler may also be able to coat it with nickel or some such thing that you may be less reactive to).

Your doctor may also suggest applying a hydrocortisone cream to see if the itch gets better.

Does the ring have any design on it.? Could some dirt have gotten into the grooves.? I'd try to clean the ring thoroughly first, and also make sure no water ever gets trapped between your finger and the ring.Health Question & Answer

When you wash your hands, are you sure to get the water dried out from under neath.? If you take that ring, wipe it across your face, do you get a black line.? If so, you could have low iron aka anemia. You could be having a reaction to to the ring because of that. Health Question & Answer

Someone sold the real gold ring and gave you a fake that's making you break out, lol.Health Question & Answer

As you have said that it is pure gold I take it for face value. But anyway just for your information, jewelry is never made in pure gold. (24 carat) because gold is not pliable. It is mixed with copper or cadmium so that it can be worked with. Its purity gets reduced proportionate to the mixing. That's why we have 22 carat and 18 carat gold.

Having said that, gold is actually an inert metal in the sense it does not react like other metals do. So is silver. It is only the other metal that is mixed with, which makes the jewelry gold an alloy, that creates allergies. For instance copper leaves a green tinge in the skin if you use it and its smell is unmistakeable. It is quite possible that the particular gold ring that gives you the rash is not pure as it is supposedly.

May be you are allergic to some metals. Do nt wear them for two months or so and then just try the bad one (.?.?!!) and see if the rash reappears. If it is stone studded and the bottom is open it is quite possible dirt in the ring has caused the allergy.

But why break your head on this. It is your mom's and just preserve it.
