Should I take Accutane?!
Question: Should I take Accutane.?
I have had acne for about 3 years now with it getting worse every year and it really lowers my self esteem. i have taken 2 or 3 different antibiotics which did little or nothing. I am now trying a clearing system called "clearpores" which consists of a facial wash, face protection cream and herbal supplements. I have taken this for about 2 weeks so far and there has been no difference at all.
my dermatologist said that I should go on Accutane but i'm scared of it. I only have moderate acne (grade 5) and I am 15 year old MALE and I am in School Year 11 (England). This is my exam year and I was wondering if accutane makes you less intelligent or something like that. I know it can cause depression but I think that that is controversial but i'm worried it might muck up my hormones or make me infertile, will it.?. When my skin does clear will it be healthy looking and have a healthy glow, or will it be horrible and really pale.?
Will Accutane permanently affect my opinions or my personality.?
Lastly, should I be taking any supplements, using any face washes, using any moisturizers, using any healing creams ,or anything like that.? (please give examples if you can). Even though it is October in England will I need to wear suncream.? and if so only for my face or all over my body.? (eg. arms). also, at the moment I am really healthy, I exercise a lot, I am intelligent ( I don't want ot boast), I play guitar and paino well (I am not boasting) and I have a nice personality. Will any of those things be taken away from me.? will I be able to sing.?
one last thing, will it make me hairy.? or make me lose the hair on my head.?
I am suposed to go on this for 3 months with the 1st week starting on 1 per day, 2nd week 2 per day, 3rd week and until end of the 3 months I have to take 3 per day. Will this work for acne that is not extremely bad but quite bad and stubbon.?

-yes, eventually. it will look like normal, healthy skin. but it takes some time. it will probably be a little red while you are on it, and for a few months after it might be a little red or pale. but after that it will just look normal.

- you will need to moisturize, definitely and use a lot of chapstick. other than that just use a gentle soap to clean your skin, nothing harsh.

- it won't make you hairy, you might get some thinning hair on your head but probably not. if you do it almost always goes back to normal once you stop taking it.

Accutane was the only thing that finally cleared up my acne completely. My brother and I both were on it and the worst side effect we suffered was the terrible dry skin it gives you. You can read more into if you wish but it won't effect your genes!

My boyfriend took that when we were in high school ... he had horrible acne when we first started dating (at 16 yrs old) within just a few months we noticed significant differences. I don't even think that he took it for a year and he has not had a problem with acne since then and now we are 22. I know that it did have some serious emotional side effects on him though. He got mad really easy and sad and his skin was really really dry at first. But I know he thinks it was totally worth it cause even 6 + years later ... he has better skin than I do!!! It is really bad for your liver too I guess so he had to get his blood drawn on a pretty regular basis to make sure that he was healthy enough. I took Accutane for years and it didn't affect me in any bad way. It has nothing to do with infertility though it can cause birth defects if a mother conceives while on it. Your skin will look normal, it has nothing to do with how pale you will be! It doesn't affect your personality in any way, shape, or form. It doesn't affect hair growth either. It has side effects, like dryness, but as long as you're monitored by a doctor, you should be fine. It was a great drug for me.

i have acne issues u 2 and have been recommended medicine for it, but i haven't taken it because i have heard of personality changes and that it doesn't make much a difference. but u need to understand that its natural for teenagers to have acne(i do) and that there r things u can be doing to minimize it. u should stick with one face wash and try not to eat a bunch of Sugar,dairy, and wheat products. i c a hug difference when i watch my diet. u will grow out of this stage.Health Question & Answer
Accutane has been proven to have down effects such as suicidal thoughts, if you suffer from depression, I was recomended to go on it, but I refused because it can have long term side effects, and alot of people have used it, and it has gone away for so long, then come back the same amount. I used natural suplements, like red clover tablets, because they do no harm to your body, whereas using antibiotics for a long period of time can be dangerous, ive been there, antibiotics do not work. I was told by the dermatologist that i would have to use moisturizer all the time because the skin would dry out from using accutane. The number of side affects is scary. I have bad acne, but let me assure you, it was much worse before i started using natural supplements. I have mild scarring, which is not permanent, but overall my skin is much calmer, so my advice would be to use red clover tablets. I dont know where you live, but if u live in the UK u should get them in holland & barett, i do not know where to buy things in the US.
If you do decide to take accutane do not take it before exams, because from what ive read it gets worse before it gets better, and the exam time is the worst time for it. Don;t risk it.

Ok so i've never taken acutane (though Ive thought about it) and Ive had acne for almost 10 years now. I know you have to be careful with it, but it wont make you sterile or change your personality permanently. I do think you should explore other options first--I found something online called acnexus, and it seems to be the only thing that actually makes a difference. I (like you) have tried MANY things. However, if nothing seems to be working and its really hurting your self esteem then I would say go for it! Yes, you have to stay out of the sun, but from what ive hear it doesnt take too terribly long and the results are great.Health Question & Answer
