I hadnt seen this, but it IS a legit possibility. During the bone marrow transplant, the patients own immune system is completly destroyed. Sometimes viruses are eliminated during that process.
The problem is that it is hit or miss on whether or not it will work. Since the virus is also in the circulating blood, not just the marrow, it is difficult to get rid of the virus. But it DOES happen. I had the transplant for leukemia. Before transplant I was positive for cmv (which is a virus most kids get) and am now negative. I was pos for hsv1 (cold sores) and am now not. BUT, I still have the chicken pox virus (I am old enough that I actually had chicken pox). On the other hand still, I have to get my mmr shots again, because those antibodies are no longer in my blood.Health Question & Answer
