I understand your concerns, but believe me that there are millions of women who have hypothyroid and lead happy, healthy and productive lives. Your physician weighed the risks and the benefits before deciding to offer you this procedure. An over active thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can be very dangerous. An under active thyroid (hypothyroidism) is bothersome, but not dangerous. However, there are hormone replacement therapies that are very effective. Once your physician gets you started on the hormone replacement therapy, then your energy levels will be better regulated and your risks of miscarriages and other health problems become the same as those with normal acting thyroids.

Your physician is doing the right thing for you. Medicine is not quick and it is not simple. It takes time.Health Question & Answer

First, you need to not freak out. No matter what you have options and both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are common.

I'm not familiar with radioiodone treatment but here are some common symptoms of hypothyroidism..
1.unexplained fatigue
2.constipation
3.dry skin
4. intolerance to cold

but the true test is to get blood tests done that check your TSH level.Health Question & Answer

Calm down. I've had hypothyroidism for 26 years, and I'm still doing fine. I'm surprised your doctor hasn't put you on a thyroid replacement pill (usually Synthroid or Thyroxin). He probably will as soon as you go hypo. I've taken a .1 mg tablet of Synthroid once daily since I was 19, and I've never had any side effects from it. I've never seen anything about miscarriages, especially if you're on medication. Usually the symptoms include weight gain and dry hair and skin. You will find it harder to lose weight, so you'll need to be careful about what you eat, but it's not impossible--I've been on the diabetic diet since July (yes, I have that too, but it's not related), and I've lost and kept off about 20 pounds. Actually, I have Hashimoto's disease (I'm allergic to my own thyroid, so my immune system shuts it down), epilepsy and diabetes, and I've never had to think twice about the thyroid--it's just one more pill.Health Question & Answer
