Answers:
No, not specifically for panic attacks but let me introduce you to a method of breathing called diaphragmatic breathing. I have panic attacks and the prescription meds that you take when you're having one still take 10-15 minutes to work anyway. Diaphragmatic breathing should be practiced and learned while you're calm so that it becomes a reflex, so when you start feeling anxious you can immediately start it before your anxiety goes into a full blown panic attack. Practice this at least three times a day for 5 to ten minutes until it becomes second nature, and then you can practice it when you're watching tv, riding in the car, whatever. To learn it and get good at it, lay down in bed or back in a recliner. Put your left hand on your chest and your right on your belly (switch if you're left handed.) Breathe normally. You should notice that when you breathe, your hand on your chest is rising. That's the way we breathe when we're stressed or expecting danger. We need to unlearn this breathing as it makes us sensitive to anxiety and panic. You want to practice breathing into your belly, to make that hand rise. Imagine a big blue balloon in your belly, and you want to inflate it and make your belly rise, then deflate it to make it go down. Breathe slowly and at a normal pace. Breathe in and out through your nose. You can breathe out through your mouth, but it's important to breathe in through your nose if possible. I keep either vick's vapo rub handy and just sniff it, or one of those vick's inhaler things, it's plastic and you stick it in your nostril and breathe in, it smells like camphor, clears your nose right up. Just lay back and do this for five to ten minutes, two to three times each day and you'll start to notice less tension in your body, and less stress and anxiety in general. Then when you feel a panic attack coming on, put your hand on your belly, close your eyes, and do the breathing until the panic goes away. It works, I do it all the time. Here's a link to the method in case I left anything out: http://www.doyoga.com/breathdiaphragm.ht...Health Question & Answer

If you are 18 or older, you're learning to make these decisions by yourself. Parents have so much influence on us emotionally and if you're considering solutions for panic attacks, you are likely to be nervous and otherwise emotionally impacted by your mother because you're probably very sensitive. This makes it tough to challenge her, especially if you're living under her roof. If you are 18 or older, though, you have a right to investigate and choose options that you think are beneficial to you. You are going to be making these choices the rest of your life and it's necessary for adults to be able to make their own decisions!

Her belief is only one of many out there. For the person who wants to take prescribed medications, there is a risk with ALL MEDICATION. Ones that are on the market longer and have therefore been studied longer are usually more reliable than newer medications. Newer meds have the benefit of current research, but they do not have the advantage of knowing long term affects.

Medications can be stopped if you don't like them.

One of the best things to ask yourself is:

"Does the risk of not taking medicine outweigh the risk of taking medicine.?"

Research every drug, and seek 2nd opinions if you can. Sometimes doctors push one drug more than another either A) they've seen positive results and know it to be reliable or B) they're interested in a new drug on the market and since they think it is going to be better than drugs they've used in the past, they want to see how it works on you!

A is good because of the time tested reliability and B is only beneficial if the doctor is correct in his/her hunches that it's a better drug.
