There is no lead in pencils...

It is graphite. Graphite is the third form pure carbon which is non-harmfull. (the other two pure carbon types are diamonds and nanotubes aka "Buckyballs". You will hear much MUCH more about nanotubes in the future).

After graphite was found it was also called "black lead". Around 1565 someone figured out how to put graphite into a wood holder and use it for writing. Because of the "black lead" nick name they were called "lead pencils". Pure lead was used for writing but that was before the 1500's.
