My husband has been diagnosed with type2 diabetes?!

Question: My husband has been diagnosed with type2 diabetes.?
My question is how if you are a type 2 diabetic which he take oral meds for , but how do you go from taking oral meds to insulin as of now he has to take insulin too. I thought type 2 diabetics only took oral meds. Is it bad that he is on insulin taking 30 units twice a day and oral meds.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
the reason that he has been given the insulin is that the meds may not be working as well as they should be and the extra insulin boosts the effect.

type II diabetes is insulin resistance, where normal doses of insulin no longer has an effect on the blood sugar level. (this is known as sensitivity....where the more sensitive = less dosage of insulin required to maintain blood glucose/sugar)

in your husbands case his sensitivity to insulin is very low..... meds and insulin help but they only treat the symptoms and have side effects...furthermore individuals with Type II most likely have other health problems such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

i would be intrested in knowing what your husbands fasting (no food) blood glucose level is.? (greater than 5 = diabetic)

diabetes is a terrible condition but because it is so common it is often overlooked and thought to be harmless...
diabetes is a major cause of:
* retonopathy (blindness)
* gangreen (poor circulation of blood due to stiff arteries..treatment = amputation)
* nephropathy (kidney damage/failure)
to list some.

95% of diabetes cases are type II.... and fortunately it is the easiest to treat.... all u have to do is..yep u guessed it...EXERCISE....and if done correctly diabetes sufferes (II) can go of their medication and lead a normal life.

walking for 45-60min per day (moderate speed) can take fasting blood glucose from 11 down to 4 (normal), and whats even better is that exercise treats high cholesterol and high blood pressure at the same time.

also sticking to an exercise program will increase your husbands insulin sensitivity dramatically, so eventually less exercise would be required to maintane normal levels....e.g. may go down to 25-30min/day (which is what healthy people should be doing).

on the diet side of things your husband should eat complex carbohydrates (whole grain breads, brown rice) mostly and avoid processed food (full of salts and sugars), and foods high in fat. also people make the assumption that sugar is found in things that are only sweet, but infact sugar is a carbohydrate and carbohydrates are found in wheat based foods like pasta white rice, breads...etc.

an exercise program and a healthy diet will dramatically improve your husbands health..and eventually he will be able to go off of his medication.

Consult your doctor first...(he will definately encourage exercise, (if he doesnt change your docotr) but may wait a while before he reduces your husbands meds)Health Question & Answer

With type 2 diabetes your pancreas is still pumping out insulin, so you don't need to inject insulin to stay alive. But some type 2s still use insulin, because it can help. It might be that your hubby didn't respond to oral meds.

There's nothing wrong with insulin. It isn't even considered a 'drug' because your body produces it. So long as he's not shooting way more than is called for, it can only help him.

I am a type 2 but I've never used insulin. But I'm on an e-mail list for diabetics and most are type 2 and some use insulin. They say once they started on insulin they wished they had started on it earlier. Apparently it makes blood sugar control much easier.Health Question & Answer

After a certain period of time, especially if the disease is untreated, many Type 2 Diabetics "progress" (regress.?.?.?) into Type 1.

What happens is that, after many months or years of "abuse" the pancreas starts to give out completely. Instead of producing SOME insulin, it produces NONE. The patient then needs insulin shots to stay alive.

There is one other possibility: He has a very aggressive doctor. [That is a good thing]
The longer the blood sugar readings stay high, the more damage they do, and much of this damage is permanent. So some doctors (too few, in my estimation) take a very aggressive approach, and recommend insulin early, in order to bring the blood sugars down quickly.

The goal, then, it to adjust the lifestyle through diet and exercise, to the point that the insulin can be reduced or eliminated.

You should ask the doctor the reason for the insulin -- Has your husband progressed into Type 1, or is this an aggressive safety measure.Health Question & Answer

In the beginning, type 2 takes only oral medicine. But if the sugar level is not able to control by that medicine, then type 2 also need to take insulin shots. But about the unit that he need to take is totally depends on the level of sugar. So better to consult doctor before too late.

Health Question & Answer

Ask the Dr. for a diet that might help some.
My brother was on pills, and with a diet he was able to get off those pills.Health Question & Answer
