I have been testing my blood for diabetes?!

Question: I have been testing my blood for diabetes.?
My doc says I am pre diabetic. I'm supposed to check it. They tell me to poke my finger. When I was giving blood, they poked my ear and it didn't hurt a bit. I wondered why I couldn't prick my ear to test for sugar too... Anybody know.?Health Question & Answer

There IS a difference between locations on the body, and the test meter has to be able to account for this.

MOST commercially available "personal" meters do not account for testing on other parts of the body except the finger tips.

Some of the new meters allow you to test on the forearm, and possibly the calf.

Ask your pharmacist about the features of the different meters.

but consider this -- you should be testing at least twice a day, maybe 3-4 times. The test STRIPS are not reusable. Now, the strips for the finger-only meters are cheaper than for the other-body-parts meters, sometimes by as much as 3X! For example, strips for my meter are about $0.50 each, but for another popular brand, they are $1.50 each. [And you buy them 50-100 in a box] So that's $2.00 A DAY for me, but $6.00 a day for someone else!

And the strips aer not interchangeable. You must use the correct strips for the correct brand of meter you buy.Health Question & Answer

I work for a diabetic supply company and we sell monitors that allow you to prick your forearm, upper arm, or even your calf, but I haven't heard of pricking your ear yet. I mean, you could probably prick your ear if you wanted to, you just may not have an accurate reading.Health Question & Answer

You need to test in an area with adequate blood flow. Your fingertip is best, but some meters will let you test in your forearm. I've never heard of using your ear. Health Question & Answer
