Question: Diabetes Type II Help My mom needs different medicine.?
My mom has diabetes and she is taking metformin.
My mom has the worst possible side effects while taking them and has been taking this medicine for 2 years now. We are wondering if there is a medicine that is like metformin but different.
also if there is a medicine that is not Glyburide. (which causes bad sideffects)

Wow that's a tough one. Because Metformin is the only one in it class. Start off with Mom exercising and low carb (low Glycemic Index) foods. If she already does that , Skip that part. 30 min. to and hour walking is fine. Maybe then she can reduce dosage of metformin.

Talk to doctor about :Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors. This class of drugs, which includes acarbose (brand name Precose) and miglitol (Glyset), acts by inhibiting the breakdown and subsequent absorption of carbohydrates from the gut following meals, so it is most effective in controlling postprandial (after-meal) elevations in blood glucose.

also I hate to recommend these two drugs,. but here goes. Actos and avandia may help lower metformin dosage.

Take metformin with food! I hope she can work this out. Because metformin is the best drug for Type 2

Still she can try Amaryl 2 ones a day before first meal / breakfast.
