Why does my dog act like he doesn't know where he is after having a seizure? He is taking 75 mg phenobarbital ?!

Question: Why does my dog act like he doesn't know where he is after having a seizure.? He is taking 75 mg phenobarbital .?
At first they loaded him with 150 mg, and he was extremely hiper as if it was an adverse reaction, no drowsiness at all. He had his first seizure 10/21, then 10/28, and nothing until 11/19 where he had clusters for 30 min or so. Health Question & Answer

How often is he getting the phenobarb.? and have you called your vet about the additional seizures.? They do need to know about his additional seizures so they can adjust his meds.
After a seizure, just like people, they are not aware of what just happened, and are probably experiencing a bit of amnesia. They are disoriented, and depending on the type of seizure, may actually be seeing, smelling, and hearing things that are not really happening. (My friends dog would get worked up barking at things that weren't there, it was very interesting to watch, but awful for the pup).
Dogs may feel very sleepy (my pup always slept about 10 hours after an episode) and that may also be a part of what is happening. You know how you get when you wake up suddenly from a deep sleep.? That is probably what he is feeling like. Maybe a little nauseated, and possibly a bit of a headache as well.
The best thing to do for your pup post seizure is to just talk calmly to him, pet him in a very soothing manner. Let him know he is safe, and don't let him wander around, into, or off of (deck, stairs, etc.) anything. Keep him calm and quite. He might vomit when he starts to return to his normal level of awareness, and that is normal too.
If you watch for it, you can tell pretty much the moment they return to full awareness. So, the short of it is that his disorientation is normal and you just need to gently support him through it!
Best of luck to you and your pup, let the vet know that his seizures are still happening though.Health Question & Answer
