Question: Blood Pressure Question: 159/110.?
Is 159/110 really bad.?I was prescribed a "water pill" hydrochlorothiaizde (HCTZ). Does this type of medicine work.? I'm 22, 5'7" 170lbs, down from 210, but my BP has not decreased.High BP runs in the family, but I know my weight probably has some to do with it.Any suggestions to help lower my BP.?Should I be on a different medication.?Thanks.Health Question & Answer

hctz is a diuretic drug and it increases the release of sodium in urine and sodium draws water with him from tthe blood and thus decreases hypertension. its the drug of choice as they say in pharmacology book.
it would not work only if ur not controlling ur diet (salt esp.) however if u think ur following what ur doctor told u and nothing happened(the drug isnt working) then u may tell him.

Water pills do work. One thing you must do is restrict fluid intake somewhat, at least according to my cardiologist. There isn't much use in taking a pill to loose water if you pour it right back in.
That pressure is high enough to do something about but you appear to be under medical care for it. If it is higher than the reading they have been getting, phone it in to them.

You did not say how long you had been on the HCTZ--it has to have a chance to work. If you have been on it a few weeks, then you may need a second medication added to the HCTZ or a change of meds. Only you doc can advise you in this--not us here on YA--there are many kinds of blood pressure meds.Health Question & Answer
